Prairie Dog Coalition Fundraiser

Prairie Dog Coalition fundraiser: Living on Burrowed Time VIII

Mark your calendars for the 8th annual Prairie Dog Coalition fundraiser, featuring a tribute to author and activist Terry Tempest Williams, on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the St. Julien Hotel in Boulder. The VIP reception will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the general reception at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 and are already going fast. This event, where wine and wildlife protection mingle beautifully, typically sells out, so get your tickets early.

This year’s theme, “Living on Burrowed Time,” illuminates the devastating state of today’s prairie dog population. Every year millions of prairie dogs are killed, leading to an astounding 95 percent decline in their population. Organizers say this is like the canary in a coal mine” situation foreshadowing what will happen to the population of other prairie animals, such as hawks, eagles, badgers, and black-footed ferrets, if they are not protected now.

The Prairie Dog Coalition, located at 2525 Arapahoe in Boulder is a program of the Humane Society of the United States and is an alliance of non profit organizations, citizens, and scientists, all dedicated to prairie ecosystem restoration and prairie dog protection. This is accomplished through information, advocacy training, and planning and promoting conservation projects.

The evening’s honoree and keynote speaker, Terry Tempest Williams, is the author of “Finding Beauty in a Broken World,” highlighting the prairie dog’s plight. She also created “Prairie Dog Day,” and will accept “Prairie Dog Protector of the Year” honors at the event.

The coalition is currently seeking donations of gift items for the silent auction, priced from $50 to $250 (and beyond!) by Oct. 15.
