Bicycling Boulder County, Colorado
Longmont Museum’s newest exhibit, “Bicycles! 150 Years of Gears,” runs through July 3 and includes many special events for cyclists. June 12: Bike to the Museum Family Day, from 10am-1pm, features a bike-decorating station, a bike rodeo and maintenance checks. June 23: Bike to Work Day, 7-9am, includes free breakfast at the museum. July 1: “Tour de France with the Pros” at 7pm brings together local experts and former Tour competitors for a lively discussion about the race. Longmont Museum is at 400 Quail Road. 303-651-8374. June 26-27: Bike MS is Colorado’s oldest nonprofit ride, celebrating 25 years in 2010. Proceeds from the two-day event support programs to enhance the lives of people living with MS and fund vital research. More than 3,000 cyclists follow the route from Westminster to Fort Collins, with catered rest stops along the way. 303-698-7400. Bike to Work Day/ Walk & Bike Month, June 2010 June 23: Last year, nearly 150,000 car miles were saved by participants who did not drive on Bike to Work Day and instead biked, telecommuted, carpooled, walked or rode transit. Blue River Century and Metric Century Aug. 22: These two rides follow the same route around Keystone until the second aid station. At that point, the Blue River Century ride allows you to choose one of three different finish options, depending on your skill level. All proceeds benefit the LiveStrong Foundation. July 31-Aug. 2: The Courage Classic, benefiting The Children’s Hospital Foundation, is a three-day, 157-mile journey that begins and ends in Leadville and features stunning mountain views the whole way. Kaiser Permanente Moonlight Classic July 17: The Moonlight Classic is a 10-mile, noncompetitive, late-night charity ride that raises funds for Seniors Inc., a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping Colorado seniors maintain independence. The redesigned closed course in Denver tours city landmarks as it winds through LoDo and the Cherry Creek shopping district. The Family Wave begins at 10:30pm and the “Gonzo Wave” is at 11:30pm. June 13-19: The 25th anniversary of Ride the Rockies takes 2,000 cyclists on a 532-mile mountainous trek from Grand Junction to Salida over seven days. The participants were already chosen by lottery, but spectators are always welcome along the route, which winds through towns like Ouray, Durango and Pagosa Springs. SPAN the Rockies: Cycling for Healing, Hope and Opportunity Aug. 15: SPAN the Rockies, a benefit for Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, offers three routes200k beginning at 6am, 130k at 7am, and 75k at 8am. All rides begin and end at Elevations Credit Union, 2300 55th St., where a celebration with food and beverages follows the rides. 303-449-8623. July 24: Choose 75 miles or 100; either way, you wind through mountainous terrain on a challenging route through Lyons, Peaceful Valley, Ward and Left Hand Canyon. Proceeds benefit a variety of organizations, including Moving to End Sexual Assault and MileHigh Youth Corps. See the website or call 303-875-9000 for details. Aug. 21: From its 20k Family & Fun Ride to a challenging 100-mile course through Loveland and up to Estes Park and back, this event to benefit the American Diabetes Association has something for every skill level. Routes begin at the Boulder County Fairgrounds, 9595 Nelson Road in Longmont. Aug. 29: Colorado’s only all-women’s cycling event offers three course options (33, 51 or 67 miles), all beginning at Prospect Park in Longmont and winding through Longmont, Hygiene and Niwot. The community festival after the ride features food and drink, live music, and wellness stations. Proceeds benefit Greenhouse Scholars, a Boulder-based nonprofit that provides mentoring and scholarship support to high-performing but under-resourced students.
