Good family winter fun!

Hear the phrase “old-fashioned winter fun” and you’re likely to think of ice skating, sleigh rides, hot chocolate and folks bundled up in scarves and mittens.

At WinterSkate in downtown Louisville, the phrase comes to life with all of those things and more. WinterSkate, now in its 15th year and its 11th in Louisville, is a joint venture between Boulder Creek Events and the Louisville Downtown Business Association. The event transforms the historic Steinbaugh Pavilion and the adjacent parking lot into a 6,500-sqare-foot winter wonderland that makes you feel as though you are stepping right onto a frozen pond in the middle of a Currier & Ives engraving.

WinterSkate is open every day through Jan. 5, including holidays, and then select days through Presidents’ Day weekend. Prices, which include skate rental, range from $9 for adults down to $4 for children 3 and under, with discounts for college students, senior citizens and military personnel. If you happen to have your own skates, bring ’em with and receive $4 off.

WinterSkate also hosts special events throughout the skating season, including carriage rides on select dates, a Chanukah celebration on Dec. 10, and a fundraiser for There With Care on Dec. 12—donate a new toy, canned goods or cash to receive free skate admission.

The Steinbaugh Pavilion is at 824 Front St. in historic downtown Louisville. To find out more about WinterSkate, including specific hours and punch-card discounts, visit
